Chinese company, Xiaomi, released two models in India, The Redmi 1s and Mi3. These two phone took the market the storm as the sales closed within seconds after the release. The Xiaomi Redmi 1S is budget smart phone priced at Rs. 5,999. This is a strong contender to the Moto E. It's got a strong quad core processor clocked at 1.6GHz and 4.7" IPS Retina HD display. Following is the review of the phone and its performance.
Lets Start with the Build Quality of the phone. This phone has got plastic back cover. Though the material is plastic, it looks like Aluminum and is strong. The display is AGC Dragontrail Scratch Resistant Glass. Asahi Glass Co (AGC) released the Dragontrail Scratch Resistant Glass to compete with the Corning Gorilla Glass. This AGC Dragontrail Display is strong and scratch resistant. So, even if you don't have a screen guard on, you need not worry about scratches on the screen from your keys or coins. There's a 3.5mm jack on the top and a micro USB port at the bottom along with a mic. Back of the phone, it's got camera lens at top center, flash right below the camera lens and speaker to the right side of the lens. It's got another mic above the lens. You have Volume Rocker and Power key to the right. The volume rocker is above the power key which is quite opposite to that of most of the Androids as they have Volume rocker below the power key. In the front, you have secondary camera to the top left and proximity sensor. You also have speaker. This phone has got options, home and back key in the same order.
Xiamo Redmi 1S sports a 4.7" IPS Retina Display at 1280x720 resolution with 320dpi. The user interface is customized by MI for this phone. It isn't close to Android except for few features like drop down notification tray. It takes time to get familiar with the Redmi 1S' user interface. The lock animation on this phone is worthy to be mentioned. The animation is pretty good. You don't have a Menu key in the user interface, all the apps will be stuffed on the home screen itself. You have to slide the screens to access apps. You also have a separate theme store so that you can download any theme of your wish. The touch screen on Redmi 1s has got 10 point multitouch. You have to press and hold the options key to get the taskmanager. This is quite unique when compared to other Android phones. It took me a day to get to this option.
Primary camera of Redmi 1S is 8MP with LED flash and can record videos at 1080p resolution and capture pictures at maximum resolution of 3264x2448. Secondary Camera of Redmi 1s is 1.6MP. Secondary Camera of this phone can detect faces and can record videos at 720p resolutions. Redmi 1S supports fullHD playback.
Xiaomi Redmi 1S runs of Android Jelly Bean 4.3, which is a draw back. As its competitor Moto E runs on latest Android Kit Kat 4.4. Redmi 1S has Quadcore Qualcomm SnapDragon MSM 8228 1.6GHz Process. The GPU on this phone is Adreno 305. This phone has got 1GB RAM. So you wouldn't have any problem running high end game at maximum resolution. I've had no problem playing Dead Trigger 2 and EA Real Racing 3 on this phone. The settings were at maximum. There were no lags and the graphics were smooth. Redmi 1S comes with 8GB ROM. However, you can use microSD card upto 64GB.
Redmi 1S comes with 2050mAh battery. The battery can stand 1 day of mixed usage. You don't have to juice it up too often. It lasts longer than expected. Redmi 1S supports Dual SIM, one 3G and the other 2G. This phone has many number of sensors for the price. It has got Direction Sensor, G Sensor, Acceleration Sensor, Light Sensor, E-Compass, Proximity Sensor, Gyro Sensor, Linear Acceleration Sensor and Rotation Vector Sensor.
Pros : HD Display,1.6GHz Quad Core Processor, Adreno 305 GPU, AGC Dragontrail Screen
Cons : Android 4.3, 4.7" Display. The User Interface might be a con as it takes time getting used to it.
Final Verdict : This phone is worth every penny you pay for it. You get HD display, Long Battery Life and 1.6GHz quadcore processor at just RS. 5,999.
